Yard Pests to Watch for That Can Affect Your Concrete

It’s all too common in Ohio; raccoons and possums in your trash, ants, spiders, and bees invading your personal space. But what about pests that can affect your sidewalks and driveways? Yeah, they exist too! We don’t want to give you yet another nuisance to worry about but we want to make sure you are prepared and protected from these common lawn pests.

There are a whole host of rodents that can do their own due diligence of damage to your walkways. We’ll explain more about all of these critters and how you can curb their negative impact on your property.

Mouse

These tiny (ish) mammals are the root of many home issues, and yes, that unfortunately also means your concrete. Rodents are natural burrowers and they are always looking for a new shelter and food source, and your home’s foundation is the perfect place.

When mice, rats, voles, and gophers begin to dwell under your concrete foundations, it can sometimes be too late to prevent any damage.

The main damage is caused by burrowing. These stubborn mammals can and will make their way underneath any surface to ensure their safety from predators. A large family of rodents can deteriorate slabs in a matter of days.

Groundhog

Chewing is another method of destruction from these creatures. The vast majority of rodents, such as mole rats, have massive front teeth and very strong jaws. Any decently aged rodent will know its way around chewing through nearly any material. Though less common, rodents can still significantly deteriorate concrete through chewing.

Repairing this kind of damage is as simple as calling us! But we’ll explain a little more. Mudjacking the slab and raising it in order to fill the void left below it. However, this is not always the end solution, you may need to fully replace some or all of the concrete.

Certainly, you wouldn’t want something like this to happen again (if at all). So how do you prevent it? You may need to enact pest control tactics such as traps or poison to keep them from returning to your home. If worse comes to worst, contact a local pest control service. Keep an eye out for those crafty critters!
