Favorite Chalk Designs of 2021 So Far

Of course, at Level Best, we love the look of smooth, newly poured, concrete, with fresh-pressed lines. So clean and unblemished by time and the elements. It’s a thing of beauty! But while we appreciate fresh gray concrete, we also love the chalk art people make using concrete as their canvas. So that’s what we’re looking at today. Our favorite family-friendly chalk designs of 2021—so far.

EPCOT Interactive Street Art

In a previous post, we looked at the work of three pioneers of interactive 3-D street art. Interactive street art uses perspective and optical illusion to give a flat surface depth, and it allows for viewers to participate in the scene. For example, a talented street artist can make a sidewalk look like a crumbling sinkhole that you could fall right into.

What makes it interactive? These pieces of art make for great photo ops. For example, get a picture of yourself balancing on the edge of the sinkhole, and you’ve got a unique photo for your social media accounts.

Frozen chalk art

One of the best spots to find interactive chalk art the whole family will love is the EPCOT Festival of the Arts. This event usually takes place from early January to late February each year. Many talented artists come together and create stunning images for you and your family to wonder at and participate in. One piece features Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf from Disney’s Frozen, building a snowman together. You get to take part, as you guide the snowman’s stick arm into place.

While these works of art are breathtaking, they can be intimidating for those who want to take up the chalk for themselves. They might make you feel like there’s no point making your own chalk designs because they could never be as good. Push those negative thoughts aside! You don’t have to be a capital “A” artist to have fun with chalk.

Family fun

Try making sidewalk art as a family, especially with kids. Gather your spouse and kids, a bucket of colorful chalk, and make for your driveway or sidewalk. It’s an inexpensive way to have fun. Usually, all you need to do is supply the chalk, and your kids’ imaginations will take care of the rest.

But if you or your kids need ideas, have some prompts ready to stir their creative juices. For example, ask them to draw one of the following.

  1. Their favorite character from a movie

  2. Their favorite animal or family pet

  3. A memory from a family trip or vacation

You can even print stencils online! Once they get started, it’ll be hard to make them stop. And the best part is, you end up with a colorful driveway, some great pictures for your social accounts, and, most importantly, family memories.

It’s educational

If you or your kids aren’t fans of drawing, no worries!

The great thing about playing with sidewalk chalk with your kids is that it can be educational. Depending on the age of your children, you can work on anything from identifying colors and shapes, to creating complex patterns. This can actually help develop their fine motor skills, improve cognition and self-confidence.

To mix education with play, you could have your children practice writing letters or spelling words. You could write out math equations for them to solve. You could even have them write out positive quotations to work on their handwriting and mindset. Who doesn’t love seeing a positive quote scribbled on the concrete? It brightens your day.

Whether you’re visiting EPCOT or just trying to find something fun to keep your kids occupied, sidewalk chalk and concrete are all you need to have a good time. Of course, you want to make sure your concrete is level. If you have a sinking, shifting, or crumbling concrete, we would love to help make your concrete the best canvas possible for you and your family.
