Level or Replace? How to Tell What is Needed

Concrete is one of the strongest materials in the world, but it does inevitably go through dome intense wear and tear. When your sidewalks or driveway begins to look old or cracked, you may not always need to replace them. Sometimes all you need to do is level your sidewalks. Leveling is faster and less expensive than replacing your sidewalks.

Cracking

One of the most common issues with concrete is cracking. Cracked sidewalks are a tripping hazard, so it is important to repair cracks as soon as possible. Cracks that are 1/4 inch or less can be repaired by leveling the concrete. Replacement is typically needed for all cracks larger than ½ inch. The same rule of thumb can also be applied to driveways. Repairing concrete at an early stage of cracking may help prevent you from having to replace the concrete slab.

Sinking

Sidewalks sinking is another frequent issue sidewalk owners are faced with. Sunken sidewalks become a safety hazard for anyone using the sidewalk. Properly fixing damaged sidewalks is an important aspect for the safety of users of the sidewalks. Sunken driveways are both a tripping hazard and a bump your car will readily endure. Sunken concrete is usually able to be fixed with concrete leveling.

Aging

Concrete is very durable, but the frequent walking, running, driving, and biking traffic it endures can cause a fair amount of damage. On average, concrete slabs are able to withstand these activities for 15 years. After that, much of the concrete may need to be replaced. Concrete leveling can fix many of these problems, but aged concrete will not always level as nicely as newer concrete. Although leveling your concrete may be the more desirable option, some cases may not make it the better option. In some scenarios, leveling may not be an option.

Repairing sidewalks and driveways is an important responsibility of the owner of the property.
